About the publication
Honest Arts Journal is for readers who want to spend a little more time with art, whether they are standing before an artwork, turning through a book or finding a quiet moment to make something. We explore how art is made, how it can be read and how its materials and histories shape what we see.
What we cover
Our subjects include close looking, artistic materials, art history, interpretation and creative practice. We favour questions that help readers notice more: how a choice of shape directs the eye, what a material allows, or why an artwork may hold several meanings at once.
Who it is for
The publication is for curious general readers, not only people with formal art training. We aim to explain terms when they matter, distinguish observation from interpretation and leave room for readers to form their own views.
How we approach art
We take an unhurried, concrete approach. A detail can open a larger subject, but it should not be made to stand for everything. We value context, careful description and the possibility that a good question may be more honest than a neat final answer.
